A Bit About Ben
Ben Johnson is a voice and piano teacher who is passionate about helping students grow as musicians while building confidence and a genuine love for music. He believes every student learns differently, so his lessons are tailored to each individual's goals, interests, and learning style. Whether working with a young beginner, an adult hobbyist, or a singer preparing for auditions, Ben strives to create lessons that are encouraging, engaging, and challenging in the best way.
Ben holds a Master of Music in Voice Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance, with a second major in Psychology and a minor in Musical Theatre, from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. He is currently pursuing an Artist Diploma in Opera Performance at Rutgers University. His background in psychology has shaped the way he teaches, helping him meet students where they are and find approaches that work best for each individual.
Alongside his vocal training, Ben has studied piano for many years and enjoys teaching beginning and intermediate piano students. He believes learning piano provides a strong musical foundation while developing creativity, problem-solving skills, and confidence. His goal is to help students become independent musicians who enjoy the process of learning just as much as their accomplishments.
As an active performer, Ben enjoys bringing what he learns on stage into the teaching studio. His recent performances include Camille and St. Brioche in *Die Lustige Witwe*, Rapunzel's Prince in *Into the Woods*, Henrik in *A Little Night Music*, and Fabrizio in *The Light in the Piazza*. He has also appeared as a tenor soloist in Mozart's *Requiem* and *Mass in C minor* and has participated in nationally recognized training programs including SongFest, the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, and Opera in the Ozarks.
For Ben, music lessons are about more than learning notes or improving technique. They are an opportunity to build confidence, develop discipline, and discover the joy of making music. Whether a student's goal is to perform professionally or simply to enjoy music for a lifetime, Ben is committed to helping them grow into thoughtful, confident, and expressive musicians.
